Need to know how to organize under the bathroom sink? If you’re anything like me, under the bathroom sink is normally super chaotic. When the under sink gets cleaned, it quickly reverts itself back to the way it was before. You keep trying and trying to get a handle on it but to no avail. Finally, you just sit there accept that your under sink will never be organized.
I see your cluttered and disorganized under-sink and raise you my 3 simple ways to get the under sink of your dreams. Once I used this method, my under sink stayed organized for much longer, leading me to believe it is more effective for me. I wanted to share my method with you.
This post is all about my method to show you how to organize under the bathroom sink.
Here’s a before and after shot of my under sink using my three simple steps:
Step 1: Declutter
The first thing I did was decluttering my under-sink area. I took everything out and sorted it into five piles:
- Products I use on a daily basis
- Things I use once or twice a week
- Products I use a few times a month
- Things that I rarely use
- Trash
I decided that I would only keep the things in categories 1 and 2 under my sink. The items in this category for me included my oral hygiene products, everyday makeup essentials, skincare products, hairbrushes and styling tools, lotion, and hand soap. This would drastically reduce the number of items that I needed to keep organized. I then put the items that I rarely use and use a few times a month in a separate plastic bin in my closet.
For me, this was mainly makeup products that I save for special occasions, menstrual products, scented soaps and lotions that I only use once in a while, and hair products that I don’t use all the time, but don’t want to throw away. Storing items you don’t use all of the time in another place is a great way to reduce clutter. This will ensure your under-sink items are items that actually get used enough to justify being there.
Now the decluttering is done. Next, I think about how I am going to place my items under the sink. I decided that what would work best for me was to place like items in groups together (for example, keeping my facial cleanser with my moisturizer, putting all of my styling tools together, keeping my makeup together, etc). Items that are used the most frequently (more than once a day) are placed on the countertop. It made sense for this to be my toothbrush and toothpaste, mascara, eyeliner, and hand soap. Doing this would reduce the redundancy of needing to reach into my under-sink area.
Step 2: Grouping Items Using Storage Containers
This step might require a trip to target, but it’s definitely worth it. If everything has a designated spot, things are likely to stay more organized for longer. I recommend using some sort of small bin, jar, basket, or drawer to make sure things stay organized. In the pictures above, I used whatever I had handy — a mason jar for my makeup brushes, a travel toothbrush holder for my hairbrushes, a makeup organizer to store my beauty essentials, and a shower caddy for everything else.
I bought this stackable drawer thingy from target a few months ago and I am OBSESSED with it! I store my heat styling tools in it and then store my skincare products and mouthwash on top of it. It made organizing my under-sink area a breeze. If I wanted to, I have the option of stacking another one on top for more things in the future. For now, I really like the setup of my under the sink, so I don’t have to. It’s still nice to have the option. If you want to buy one, click here.
Step 3: Organize Groups To Fit Your Needs
This is the most fun step — organizing! I put the things that I grab the most in the front. Making your most used items more accessible could potentially mean less chaos later on. I made sure my nightly skin routine products were very reachable above the stackable drawer. Also, I placed my makeup brushes all in one jar on top of the makeup organizer, so I can grab all of my brushes and put them back neatly when I’m done. I left a few makeup products that I’m likely to wear more often (foundation stick, eyebrow pomade, liquid eyeliner, on top of the organizer as well so I could get to it and put it away easily.
