Starting your femininity journey? This blog post is about some subtle ways you can start feeling feminine.
Have you been wanting to feel more feminine, but not sure where to start? Do wearing pink dresses and high heels not feel authentic to you? There is good news– every woman is feminine in her own unique way. While there are cultural norms and expectations of what traditional femininity looks like, you are free to take what you want and leave the rest. Here is a list of different ways that you can feel feminine if you’re starting your femininity journey or just wanting to feel a little more feminine.
Wear hair accessories or jewelry
If you want to dip your metaphorical toes into the pond of femininity, wearing hair accessories and/or jewelry is a great way to start! On a typical day, I wear hair scrunchies, claw clips, and bows to express myself. Wearing headbands, decorative clips, or hair wraps are other great hair accessories to try. If you want to experiment with jewelry, simple pendant necklaces and bracelets are great too!
Experiment with wearing pastels or light, feminine colors
If your budget allows, try wearing more pastels or light colors! My favorite colors to wear are cream, yellow, coral, pink, lavender, light blue, and white. The best time of year to shop for this color palette is in the spring time and early summer, but online shopping really can be your best friend in the fall and winter. Personally, I would try to stay away from black, grey, dark green, and navy. If you do wear darker colors, I would try to style them into a more feminine silhouette.
A smile can go a long way
This may sound really strange, but embracing a warm personality may make you feel more feminine. Embracing a warm personality can mean smiling when you see someone! Doing so can make you seem approachable and attractive. Smiling often can boost your mood, and boost the mood of everyone around you. Smile at the cashier, the mail carrier, the barista — smile at as many people as you can!
Feel feminine by developing a solid morning and night routine
Feeling put together can certainly put you into your feminine energy. Having a morning routine (hopefully one that includes making your bed!) can make you feel accomplished, productive, and ready for the day. Maybe wearing a perfume that you like, putting on some makeup, or showering with your favorite exfoliator can be included into your morning routine.
Having an established night routine can help you wind down for the night and relax. Taking off makeup and doing some skincare, putting on comfortable pajamas, and reading a book before bed can be included in your night routine.
My favorite books to read before bed are Daily Wisdom for Biblical Womanhood by Lori Alexander (buy on Amazon here) and Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach (buy on Amazon here) .
Having a morning and night routine requires a little extra effort, but if you implement them into your daily life, not only will you feel more put together and at ease, you might feel a little more feminine in the process!
Enhance your natural beauty
This may seem like one of the more obvious femininity tips, but enhancing your natural beauty is a subtle way that you can feel more feminine. My favorite ways to enhance natural beauty is to wear mascara, blush, and some sort of tinted lip balm or lip gloss. This might look different for every woman. Some women prefer to accentuate their eyebrows or cheekbones as well. If wearing a full face of makeup is intimidating to you, I would start with mascara and a tinted lip balm. There are many affordable options to choose from and wearing mascara and lip balm looks flattering on pretty much every woman. Not to mention that it isn’t too time consuming and is a timeless and classic look!
Spend time with nature to tap into your femininity
Sometimes when I find myself in an emotional rut, a little but of sunshine revitalizes my feminine energy! Spending time with nature can boost your mood, and appreciating the beauty around you can bring out your femininity. Taking a nature walk on a calm morning, rolling the windows down in the car, or even appreciating a rainy day are subtle ways that you can bring out your feminine energy. Us women feel our most feminine when we are relaxed, so it’s no surprise to me that spending time with nature in a relaxing way can make us feel more feminine.
Receive graciously and express gratitude
Do you find yourself dismissing compliments, rejecting offers for help, rejecting gifts, not letting men pay for you on dates? You may be thwarting your feminine nature by not receiving graciously. Learning to accepting compliments and gifts with a simple “thank you” and a smile can unlock your potential to feel feminine. Accepting help (even if it isn’t needed) in some cases can also lessen your burdens, even if they’re very small. By receiving graciously, others around you may feel good about themselves that they were able to help you or please you, and will be more likely to do so again in the future.
In the same way, expressing gratitude for things that people do for you lets them know that you appreciate their effort to help you. Having a tendency to be grateful for the people and things in your life that you appreciate can also be the perfect antidote if you’re having a bad day. I like to create lists for people/things I’m grateful for every now and again if I need a pick-me-up. Even writing a note to someone telling them how grateful you are can boost your mood — and yours!
Level up your hair care
Taking care of your hair is a wonderful and subtle way to feel feminine. Whatever your natural hair type is, healthy hair is always in style! Try upgrading your shampoo and conditioner to step into your femininity. Treating yourself to a silk pillowcase or hair bonnet can feel luxurious while also reducing breakage and keeping your hair looking and feeling healthy. My favorite products this year are the T3 Lucea ID Straightener, T3 Airebrush Duo, and Shampoo and Conditioner for thick hair by Ouai.
Volunteer or participate in community service
Us women are thought to be natural nurturers. Community service might be up your alley if you’re looking for ways to benefit your community and step into your femininity! Volunteering at an animal shelter, nursing home or hospital, starting a fundraiser, or picking up litter in your community are wonderful ways to help those around you while feeling feminine in the process. My favorite way to participate in community service is to pick up trash around my town. I get to help the environment, make my surroundings look clean, and spend time with nature at the same time!
Pursue “Feminine” Hobbies
I know I need to tread lightly when naming “feminine” hobbies (which is why it’s in quotations). While any hobby can be enjoyed by either gender, there are hobbies that are thought to be more traditionally feminine. Learning to knit or crochet, bake, garden, write poetry, or play an instrument can be lots of fun! Pursuing a “feminine” hobby can lead to a lot less boredom while also helping you explore what authentic femininity feels and looks like to you.
Like I previously mentioned, the hobbies listed above aren’t necessarily inherently feminine, rather they have a cultural connection to femininity. Do whatever feels the most authentic to you! This list (and by extension this post) are suggestions for women who don’t know how to feel feminine yet. If none of these suggestions resonate with you, that is totally okay!
Decorate your space
This tip was the most fun for me when I was starting my femininity journey! Taking a trip to Target and buying some throw pillows, decorative flowers, and wall decor is a very fun (although pricey) hobby. If you’re on a budget, Etsy is a wonderful place to find affordable decor options.
Decorating in particular is a simple way to feel feminine because as women, we appreciate beauty. By decorating our space (whether it be a house, apartment, bedroom, car, office cubicle, etc), we tap into our feminine energy by beautifying the space around us. Researching different aesthetics and decorating styles can be just as fun as doing the actual decorating, too!
