These are the best design trends of 2021. These trends are all over the internet. Love them or hate them, they do indicate the future of modern home decor and interior design.
This post is all about the best design trends of 2021.
1. Pampas Grass
If you’re into interior design, you see pampas grass EVERYWHERE. The ornamental dried foliage adds texture and an air of lusciousness to any space. This trend seems to be the most controversial (some love it, some absolutely hate it). Despite its controversy, it is still very prevalent in interior design in 2021.
Pampas grass hasn’t grown on me yet, for some reason, it looks jarring. I tend to prefer a cooler color palette for my interiors, so the idea of having such a warm piece still feels off-putting for me. If you love the look of pampas grass, then go for it! West Elm offers pampas grass that you can buy, and it is also available in larger varieties on Amazon Handmade and Etsy.
2. Natural Materials
There has been a movement towards having natural materials in design — from glass, ceramic, and stone, to cotton, wool and linen, to even rattan, cane, and wicker. Rattan and wicker furniture has been making a comeback in 2021.
From my observation, this trend draws elements from two trendy design styles: Japandi and Farmhouse. Japandi is the perfect blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design styles, and farmhouse is inspired by the romanticism of the agrarian lifestyle, with a modern twist. Both design style use natural elements, and I think that this trend is a culmination of the two.
3. Circular Mirrors
Like pampas grass, it seems like circle mirrors are in everyone’s entryway. I’ve seen them in bathrooms, hallways, bedrooms, and even offices. It’ definitely a whimsical take on the rectangular mirror that has been the norm for so long. I am excited to see how creative people will get with this.
4. Eucalyptus
Once dominating wedding decor, eucalyptus has now become a top design trend of 2021. It offers gorgeous texture and an air of serenity and tranquility in any space. The scent of eucalyptus is credited for having a calming and stress relieving effect, I particularly love this trend, and I might get some for my apartment one day.
5. Warmer Color Palette
The color palette is shifting from cold colors — like stark whites, cool grays, saturated neutral browns, and muted blues — to much warmer colors. The current trending color palette in 2021 features tans, beiges, soft whites, watery blues, greens, and warm browns.
As people begin to spend more time in their homes, they begin to realize that they crave a place that is warm and inviting, hence the warmer color palette. It’s also interesting that pops of color are becoming a trend as well, since 2020 brought us a dreary and gray color palette.
6. Sustainable and Repurposed Materials
This is a trend that should never go away! There has been a movement towards sustainable products that is meant to be durable as we become more conscious on how our consumerism impacts the environment. Alternatively, buying products second hand has also exploded in popularity. Hopefully, this design trend is here to stay!
